More ₹100 & ₹200 Notes Coming to ATMs—How It Benefits You
The Reserve Bank of India has directed banks and White Label ATM (WLA) operators to load at least one cassette of ₹100 or ₹200 notes in 75% of ATMs by September 30, and 90% by March 31 next year.
Why This Move?
“The RBI aims to smooth out the perennial chhutta (small change) crunch,” explains Vineet Kumar, Senior Associate at SKV Law Offices. Smaller denominations are essential for daily transactions, especially in cash-heavy areas.
How Will It Benefit You?
- Easier access to small notes for daily spending
- Helpful for small purchases like groceries, transport, and tea stalls
- Supports micro-merchants who often struggle to provide change
The Ground Reality
India has over 2.6 lakh ATM’s, managed by NPCI. Meeting the RBI’s goal will require:
- Reconfiguring cassettes in thousands of ATMs
- Rapid and regular replenishment of small-note stock
What You Can Do
- Plan ATM withdrawals wisely to stay within free usage limits
- Carry a mix of small and large notes for convenience
- Use digital payment options like UPI, wallets, or cards as backup
